A 24 × 18 in garage sale sign, flooded with color edge to edge — because a lawn sign is printed to its edges and a white one with a small colored element is not a thing anybody stakes. Headline at 4.2 inches of cap height, which is a 35-foot read from a car.

Four words, an arrow, and the day
The reason most homemade garage sale signs fail is not the handwriting. It is that they carry an address, two dates, three times, a list of what is for sale, and an arrow about an inch long — and a driver at 30 miles an hour gets none of it.
What actually works, in order:
- The words — GARAGE SALE, YARD SALE, ESTATE SALE, MOVING SALE. One line, as large as the board allows.
- An arrow, large and unambiguous. It is doing more work than any word on the sign.
- The day, if the sign goes up early. SATURDAY does more than a date does, because nobody driving past is checking a calendar.
An address is worth including only on the sign at the house. On a corner sign it is a line of small type nobody reads, and the arrow already answered the question.
Flood the color
This is why the template looks the way it does. A sign is seen against grass, hedge, fence and parked cars, all of which are visually busy, and a white sign with a colored headline disappears into that. A flooded board — the color running to all four edges — is what reads as a sign from a distance rather than as a piece of paper.
High contrast between the flood and the type matters more than which colors you pick. Yellow with dark blue or black is the trade's default for exactly this reason and it is what this one uses.
Print, weather, stake
24 × 18 in on 4 mm corrugated plastic with an H-stake. Built at 150 DPI at final size with 0.125 in of bleed — the large-format standard, because nothing read at 35 feet resolves more.
Coroplast survives rain and a weekend of sun. Paper on a stick does not survive one shower, and a sagging sign reads as a sale nobody bothered with.
Take them down afterwards. Beyond being the neighborly thing, many cities fine for signs left up, and the same rules that govern where you may place them differ by city — worth a check with your local code office before Saturday rather than after.
Questions
What size should a garage sale sign be?
24 × 18 inches is the standard yard-sign board and what these are built at. Smaller than that and the headline cannot reach the cap height a car needs.
How big does the lettering have to be?
One inch of cap height per ten feet, plus about 20 percent beside moving traffic. At 35 feet that is 4.2 inches — roughly a quarter of the height of the board for one line.
Should I put the address on the sign?
On the sign at the house, yes. On a corner sign, no — the arrow answers it and the address is a line of type nobody can read at speed.
What should I print it on?
4 mm corrugated plastic with an H-stake, from any sign shop. Paper and poster board do not survive weather, and a sagging sign is worse than no sign.
Is "yard sale" or "garage sale" better?
Whichever your area says. Both are searched at the same level, and the template's headline is editable text — retype it. ESTATE SALE and MOVING SALE work the same way.
Can I use these commercially?
