How to print 11 × 14 at home, honestly
Most home printers cannot. 11 × 14 does not fit an 8.5 × 11 sheet, and a printer that only takes letter has no route to it — there is no setting, no trick and no borderless mode that produces a sheet larger than the tray.
The three real options, in order of how well they work:
- A printer that takes 11 × 17 tabloid. Some home and small-office models do. An 11 × 14 print on an 11 × 17 sheet leaves a margin at top and bottom which you trim off, and no side margin at all — so it prints edge to edge on the width, which most printers cannot do. In practice you want 13 × 19 paper on a wide-format model for a proper margin.
- A print counter or photo service. 11 × 14 is a standard photo-print size, so any print counter and every online photo service does it, usually for a few dollars on real photo paper. This is almost always the right answer.
- Print it at 8 × 10 instead and mat it into an 11 × 14 frame. Same wall footprint, no wide printer required, and it is the pairing galleries use anyway. The 8 × 10 templates are set up for it.
Option 3 is not a compromise. A matted 8 × 10 in an 11 × 14 frame is a more finished object than an 11 × 14 printed edge-to-edge on tabloid paper, and it costs less.
No bleed, and the half inch that gets covered
11 × 14 prints carry no bleed, for the same reason none of the wall art here does: a framed print is held at its edge rather than cut at it. The mat overlaps about a quarter inch on every side, and a frame rebate with no mat takes an eighth to a quarter.
So an 11 × 14 behind a standard mat shows about 10.5 × 13.5 inches. Everything in the templates sits inside a half-inch margin, which survives the mat, the rebate, and a trim that was not perfectly square.
If the print is being sold or signed, sign inside the visible area or on the mat. And if the buyer is going to frame it themselves, say the print size on the back — a print with no size written on it is a print somebody guesses at in a frame shop.
Resolution at this size
300 DPI is the target, which is 3,300 × 4,200 pixels. Wall art is looked at from three or four feet, which is closer than a poster and further than a card, and 300 is comfortably right for that range. The honest floor is about 200 DPI — below that the softness is visible from where people actually stand.
Type is stricter than photographs. A soft photograph reads as atmosphere; soft type reads as a mistake, because the eye knows exactly what the edge of a letter should be. If the piece is a quote print, keep the full 300 whatever else you compromise on.
