YouTube Thumbnail Templates

Thumbnails at 1280 × 720 pixels, laid out for the size a thumbnail is actually seen rather than the size it is made at. In a sidebar that is around 210 pixels wide — about a sixth of what you are looking at while you design it.

Design it at 1280, judge it at 210

This is the single discipline that separates a thumbnail that works from one that does not, and it costs nothing.

Make the image at full size, then shrink it on screen to roughly a sixth and look again. Almost everything that fails, fails here: four words become unreadable, a face that filled the frame becomes a dot, a thin outline disappears, and a busy photograph turns into texture.

What survives shrinking is short: three or four words at most, one clear subject, and real contrast between the subject and everything behind it. A thumbnail is not a poster; it is a sign.

The bottom right belongs to YouTube

The duration stamp is drawn over the lower-right corner on every video. Anything you place there is partly covered — and it is the corner people habitually drop a logo into.

The other overlay to remember is the progress bar on a watched video, which takes a strip along the bottom edge. Keep the bottom of the frame free of anything that has to be read.

Type that survives

On a 720-pixel-tall image, type below about 60 pixels is gone by the time it reaches a sidebar. That sounds enormous while you are designing and it is correct.

Two things buy legibility cheaply: a heavy weight rather than a large light one, and type sitting on a solid shape rather than directly on a photograph. A drop shadow is the usual instinct and it is the weakest of the three — it softens the edge it is meant to define.

Questions

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

1280 × 720 pixels, 16:9. YouTube also asks that the file stay under 2 MB, so export JPG for photographic thumbnails and PNG only when the image is flat color and type.

Why does my thumbnail look fine and then bad on YouTube?

Because you judged it at full size. Shrink it to about 210 pixels wide and look again — that is the size it competes at in a sidebar, and it is the only view that matters.

How many words should be on a thumbnail?

Three or four. Beyond that they stop being readable at sidebar size and start being texture.

What corner should I keep clear?

The bottom right, where the duration stamp sits, and the bottom edge generally, where the progress bar appears on watched videos.

Does a thumbnail need to match the video's first frame?

No, and it usually should not. The thumbnail is a promise about the video; the first frame is whatever the camera was pointing at.

Can I use these commercially?

Yes, including on a monetized channel and for clients. No royalty, no credit, and the permission does not expire. That is true on the free plan as well as the paid one.
