X and Twitter Header Templates

Headers at 1500 × 500 pixels with the avatar overlap drawn, plus a 1600 × 900 post image at the ratio the timeline shows whole. The platform is X and the size is unchanged from Twitter — both names still return the same thing, so use whichever you think in.

The avatar takes the lower left, and it takes more than you expect

Your profile picture overlaps the bottom-left of the header, and on narrow layouts the profile text sits under it too.

At 1500 × 500 the header is already shallow. Losing the lower left leaves a usable area that is essentially the upper right two-thirds, which is a genuinely awkward shape and the reason so many headers are just a texture. That is a legitimate answer: a header that is a well-chosen photograph or a flat color reads better than a cramped tagline.

If you do want words, keep them upper right, short, and large.

16:9 is what the timeline shows whole

Images in the timeline are cropped to about 16:9 unless somebody taps them. A post image built at 1600 × 900 is shown complete; a square or portrait image is cropped to a band through the middle and the top and bottom are hidden until tapped.

So anything that must be read — a chart, a quote, a stat — belongs in a 16:9 frame. It is the same principle as the Story safe zone: design for the crop the platform applies by default, not for the file you uploaded.

Text in an image is not searchable

Worth stating plainly because it changes what you put where: words inside an image are not indexed and are not read by screen readers unless you add alt text.

Put the substance in the post, use the image for the thing an image does better than a sentence, and write alt text. It takes fifteen seconds and it is the difference between your image being available to everyone and to most people.

Questions

What size is an X header?

1500 × 500 pixels, a 3:1 ratio. It is the same as the old Twitter header size — nothing changed when the platform was renamed.

Where does the profile picture sit?

Over the lower-left corner. Keep logos and text in the upper right, and expect the lower left to be covered on every view.

What size should a post image be?

1600 × 900, 16:9. The timeline crops to roughly that ratio, so a 16:9 image is shown whole and anything taller is cut until somebody taps it.

Why does my image look cropped in the timeline?

Because it is taller than 16:9. The full image is visible when tapped, but the timeline shows a center band.

Should I put text in the image?

Only what an image says better than a sentence. Text inside an image is not searchable and is not read aloud unless you add alt text — which you should.

Can I use these commercially?

Yes, including for clients and for a business account. No royalty, no credit, and the permission does not expire. That is true on the free plan as well as the paid one.
