11 × 17 is exactly two letter sheets side by side, which is why it is cheap: the paper is standard, every digital press takes it, and it needs no special handling. A shop that would quote you a lead time for an 18 × 24 will hand you 11 × 17 the same afternoon.
It is also the size that works in a window. Shop windows, café boards, community noticeboards and building lobbies are all read from three to six feet, and at that distance 11 × 17 is large enough to command attention and small enough that nobody minds you putting one up.
Why this one stays at 300 DPI
The larger poster sizes on this site carry lower resolution targets because they are read from further away. 11 × 17 does not get that treatment, and the reason is the distance: at three to six feet the eye is still resolving real detail, and small type on an 11 × 17 is genuinely read rather than glanced at.
3,375 × 5,175 pixels with bleed is not a large file by modern standards, so there is nothing to gain by dropping it. Keep the target at 300 here.
Printing it at home, if your printer takes tabloid
Some home and small-office printers take 11 × 17 and most do not — check the paper trays before buying a ream. If yours does:
- Export without bleed. A home printer cannot reach the edge, so bleed just means an eighth of an inch that gets cut off by the printer's own margin, unevenly.
- Choose actual size or 100% in the print dialog, never "fit to page". Fit-to-page shrinks an 11 × 17 file to fit inside the printable area, which makes it about 96% of full size with a wider border.
- Expect an unprintable margin of about 0.17 to 0.25 inch. The templates keep content inside a quarter inch, so nothing important is lost.
If it does not take tabloid, this is the one size where a copy shop is genuinely trivial — 11 × 17 on the shop's own house stock is often cheaper than the ink you would have used.
Half of it is a flyer
An 11 × 17 folded once is 8.5 × 11 — which means a tabloid poster and a letter flyer are the same design at two scales, and the same file can serve both jobs with one change in Page Setup.
That is worth knowing when a campaign needs both. Design at 11 × 17, then export a letter version for the flyers job. Going the other direction — enlarging a letter design to tabloid — works too as long as the photographs have the pixels for it, and the app will tell you at the new size.
